Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to speak Spanish or Portuguese to join the choir?

Not at all! While many of our songs are in Spanish, Portuguese, and English (and sometimes Italian or Indigenous languages), we provide pronunciation support and translations. Singing is a great way to learn, and everyone is welcome regardless of language level.

2. Do I need to have choir experience or know how to read music?

No prior experience is necessary! Our choir welcomes singers of all backgrounds — whether you’re a seasoned singer or trying choir for the first time.

Our conductors cater to different learning styles by teaching primarily by ear and repetition during rehearsals, while also providing access to online support materials such as audio tracks and full scores for those who prefer to read music. Upon joining, members receive a link to the current repertoire folder, where you can download or print materials at your own pace.

We encourage all members to engage with the material between rehearsals and aim to learn the songs by memory in preparation for performances, and most of all, we want you to enjoy the learning process and feel supported along the way.

3. What kind of music do you sing?

We explore a rich mix of Latin American and Iberian repertoire — from traditional folk songs to Afro-Brazilian rhythms, boleros, lullabies, protest songs, and original compositions. Our music reflects stories of migration, resilience, joy, and cultural connection.

4.  Where and when do you rehearse?

We rehearse weekly on Tuesdays from 6:45 PM to 8:45 PM at 12 Emerald St, Kedron QLD  4031 following Queensland school terms. Current term runs from 3 February to 31 March 2026.

5. How much does it cost to join?

Our term fee is $200, which includes weekly rehearsals, performance opportunities, community events, and access to resources like lyrics, practice recordings, and workshops.

6. Is there an audition process?

No auditions! We believe everyone can sing. Come as you are, what matters most is your enthusiasm and willingness to learn and sing with heart. Conductors will want to listen to your voice individually to place you in the best string according to your vocal range.

7. Can I attend a trial session before committing?

Yes! You’re warmly invited to join us for a free trial rehearsal to see if it’s the right fit for you. Just send us a message at latinchoir.brisbane@gmail.com.

8. Do you perform publicly?

Yes, we perform at community festivals, cultural events, and special projects throughout the year. Participation in performances is encouraged but always optional.

9. Do you welcome people from all cultural backgrounds?

Absolutely. We celebrate cultural diversity and actively welcome members from all walks of life. Our choir is a safe and inclusive space for learning, sharing, and connecting through music.

10. I’m not sure I can commit every week. Can I still join?

We understand that life is busy. While regular attendance is important for learning the repertoire and building a strong sense of community, our goal is to remain flexible and supportive.

Communication is key. We encourage members to attend as consistently as possible for their own benefit and for the choir as a whole, but we’re happy to accommodate personal circumstances such as work, family, or travel commitments wherever possible.

So let’s talk, we’ll do our best to make it work!

11. I’m interested in joining. Do I need to wait for a new term to start?

We’d love to welcome you when you’re ready to join! That said, the best time to start can depend on where we are in the performance schedule or rehearsal cycle.

Please get in touch with us directly to share your interest, and we’ll let you know the best timing and help you ease into the group in a way that supports both your experience and the choir’s flow.

12. How can I catch up on the choir’s repertoire if I miss a session?

We provide downloadable audio tracks for each vocal part so you can practise the repertoire at your own pace, anytime. A planning document is also available to help you see what we’re working on each week.

In addition, our section leaders are there to support you by answering questions, helping you rehearse a tricky bit, pronouncing, or pointing you to the right resources. You won’t be left behind!
